THE POST INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
The POST Instructor Development Institute is the newest POST institute
Approved in 2007 by the POST Commission the Instructor Development Institute (IDI) purpose is to
"provide multi-level, multi-track programs to develop professionalism in the delivery of law enforcement instruction"
The final instruction development products will provide a tiered approach to law enforcement instructor development; from basic academy and entry-level instructor skills through Master Instructor
Each tier or level will build on and enhance the skills learned at the previous level
The design, development and deliver of instruction at the basic and intermediate levels is being done by the Napa Valley College under the leadership and guidance of Greg Miraglia and Todd Dischinger

The design, development and delivery of the advanced and master levels (levels 3 and 4) is being done by the San Diego Regional Training Center (SDRTC) under the leadership and guidance of Michele Thompson, Mike Gray and Jim Fraser
SDRTC ROLES
SDRTC will continue to play a pivitol role in the design and delivery of advanced instructor development
A special Level Three Course for ICII Graduates was presented in January 2008. Another iteration will be offered September 15 to 19, 2008
The Level 3 (Advanced) course will be offered April 7 to 11, 2008
Level 4 courses (Master) are scheduled to be offered in FY 2008
As a part of the effort linkages with an accredited college will be a priority to ensure future advanced course instructor development students receive appropriate college credits for their training
This web site will continue to provide updated information on the process as it evolves

POST IDI LEVELS
MASTER LEVEL 4

Certification at the Master Level includes:

  • Complete the Master Instructor Certification Course (MICC); designing, developing and delivering a minimum of a 24-hour course that meets a demonstrated training need and is approved by POST
  • The candidate’s ISD and TTP will be evaluated by a panel prior to course delivery
ADVANCED LEVEL 3

Certification at the Advanced level includes:

  • Complete the 40-hour Advanced Instructor Development Core Course with a 16-hour Teach Back session (56-hrs total)
  • Complete the 16-hour Leadership, Coaching and Mentoring Course
  • Developing their knowledge, skills and abilities in a selected content area
  • Complete a 24-hr practicum (be mentored for 8-hrs; mentor a Level 2 student for 8-hrs; and conduct 8-hrs of classroom assessments of Level 1 or 2 students)
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2

Certification at the Intermediate level includes:

  • Completing the 24-hour Intermediate Instructional Skills or Problem Based Learning Course
  • Completing the 8-hour Presentation Skills Course
  • Completing the 16-hour Instructional Technology Course
  • Completing the 8-hour Critical Thinking Skills Course
  • Be mentored for 8-hours
BASIC LEVEL 1

Certification at the Basic Instructor level includes:

  • Complete a 40- hour POST Basic Instructor Certification Program
  • Validation of competencies in the classroom
