PUBLIC AGENCY COURSE
PROOFREADING AND EDITING PROFESSIONALLY

In a fast-moving computer age where more and more professionals are composing and typing their own documents, proofreading and editing skills have become priceless tools. First impressions about your organization are formed by the appearance and reliability of your written materials. Have you ever received a document with such obvious errors that you found yourself thinking more about the lack of proofreading than about the context of the material? Common errors, incorrectly placed or missing punctuation, improper word choices, or misspellings can lead to disaster.

This course will teach “thinking steps” for better correspondence, as well as ways to prevent hours of editing and rewriting. Participants will develop an “eagle eye” that will assure documents representing your organization are free of errors and “dressed for success.”

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
  • Foolproof techniques to spot errors before a document is mailed
  • Standard proofreading marks used for draft documents
  • Substitutes for "worn-out" phrases
  • How to identify "tricky twin" words and know which "twin" to choose
  • Quick, easy-to-check punctuation rules
  • Modern grammar trends to give documents an updated appearance
