PUBLIC AGENCY COURSE
WRITING FOR RESULTS


In this one-day workshop participants will upgrade their skills in writing, editing and evaluating reports, memos and proposals. The course will consist of both learning the principles of clear writing and practice in applying these principles to the work situation. Participants are invited to bring a work-related writing sample to the class for evaluation (two to four pages).

Upon completion of the workshop, participants can expect to have: improved skills in composition; improved ability to edit; increased confidence in writing ability; updated knowledge of trends in business writing styles; knowledge of standard formats for report writing; techniques for avoiding the most common weaknesses in report writing; improved ability to write faster and more efficiently and a detailed personal evaluation from the instructor.

  • Survey of the common problems of government writing
  • Making words work for you and not against you
  • Writing for the layman to understand
  • Importance of careful writing
  • Principles of readability
  • Conciseness and preciseness
 
  • Case studies in EFFECTIVE and INEFFECTIVE writing
  • Using typography and graphic design effectively
  • Organizing reports
  • Common problems of grammar and usage that can cause misunderstanding
  • Mechanical hints for making reports more readable
